The Sun Salutation is a foundational yoga vinyasa (a flowing sequence of poses). It represents strength, clarity, energy, and gratitude, and helps link your body and mind in the present moment so you can start your day as a happy, whole you!
The physical key to performing this sequence is to move through each asana (pose) at the speed of your own breath. Start by taking a few moments to find your breath before beginning (stand tall in mountain pose and breathe deeply through your nose). Connecting to your breath will help develop your inner focus. When you get comfortable with the transitions between asanas, you will flow easily through them and feel very present in your body.
Traditionally, Sun Salutations are done facing the rising sun, with mindfulness and awareness toward both external and internal light. Try to start your day with ten Sun Salutations. It should take about ten minutes and will help energize your body and focus your mind.
Practicing a series of Sun Salutations in the morning before eating also benefits your circulation and digestion, oxygenates your blood to help the body detox, and, of course, strengthens your arms and spine. In addition to the sunrise, the sequence can be practiced at any time of day, and is a quick and effective way to reduce your stress level, energize when you’re feeling fatigued, or simply get a good workout by stretching, flexing, and toning muscles throughout your entire body.Learn More: Yoga Journal
